Updike of Merrymount Press, Boston; a sound, tight copy in polished blue and black patterned cloth with fading on front and spine and title on paper spine label; text is clean and unmarked, with no creased or torn leaves but several unopened pages; exterior clean; small bookplate on front pastedown; binding shows gently bumped corners, rubbing at bottom corners and spine ends, a small ding and wound to top front extremity. 249 pp. This was Walt Whitman's first book, his only novel, and his literary debut, a short work on temperance originally published as a newspaper supplement in 1842. 014221
